What is Guided Reading?

Guided Reading is a structured way to help children read, understand, and enjoy a book. It is not simply a teacher reading a story aloud; It is a guided reading experience in which children are led through the book’s vocabulary, themes, characters, structure, context and ideas. In Mr Moore’s courses, children are encouraged to move beyond “knowing what happened” and towards a deeper understanding of how the writer creates meaning; why particular words and scenes matter, and how to speak about a book with clarity and confidence.

THE POWER OF GUIDED READING

Three Reasons Why Guided Reading Works.

Deeper Understanding

Guided Reading teaches children to think beyond the surface of a story. Pupils learn to explore characters, emotions, themes, and the author’s intentions, helping them develop a deeper understanding of what they read rather than simply memorising the plot.

Builds Confidence

Children develop the confidence to share ideas, explain answers clearly, and discuss texts thoughtfully. As understanding grows, reading becomes less stressful and more enjoyable both at home and in the classroom..

Better Results

Strong comprehension skills support success across English and other subjects. Guided Reading strengthens vocabulary, inference skills, and critical thinking — key abilities assessed in school reading and writing tasks..
